Preservice Teachers are required to develop EMTRGs, a  collection of multicultural education resources relevant to the field of Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  The  EMTRG demonstrates their competency in culturally relevant pedagogy/multicultural education.  EMTRG is a resource guide that consists of the following:

•  Multicultural Teaching Guidelines/Criteria

•  Multicultural Lesson Unit
•    Students are required to create a multicultural unit of instruction targeting an age range or grade range.  The unit must be integrated giving students the opportunity to learn how content areas are related to one another.

•  Multicultural Children's Literature Criteria

•   Review  of 12 books in early childhood and elementary education that depict many chracters from various   backgrounds.

•    Classroom Resources and Activities
•    This is a list of reviewed culturally appropriate and sensitive classroom resources including: links to various companies, organizations, publishers, web sites, multiple created lesson plans and classroom activities that you believe will be of use during full time teaching.  (50 resources -including resources from Gate 1)

•    Multicultural Calendar
•    Students are required to creatively design a multicultural calendar that illustrates the experiences, accomplishments, herstories, histories, and events of all peoples of the United States.

•   Reflective Essay
•    An analytical essay that examines the social inequities in our schools and describes how the EMTRGSs could be a tool to addressing these inequalities.  This essay also demonstrates the competency of preservice teachers in multicultural education.  It is expected that the preservice will be able to demonstrate their understanding of how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
